are required for domestic work in New Zealand one of Britain's Colonies.

Behind the bland assurances of the advertisement Lizzie finds a harsh, primitive reality. The young colony of New Zealand which has promised so much shows only cruelty and disappointment. From the stoney soil of these grim beginnings comes the story of life and hope nurtured by Lizzie's durable womanhood, the harsh male pressure of her new home softens.
She is a survivor and in the end she triumphs.
